The long-tailed lizard laid like a
stone in the sun. I write this as I sit on my porch keenly observing the statue-like
creature bask in the hot Texas sun. As the light shined in between the small
slats of the fence surrounding the patio, the lizard remained still. The lime colored
skin contrasts that of the gray concrete the organism rests on. It is shimmering
as if a spotlight was focused on the creature. The wind blows, ruffling the
leaves surrounding the lizard, trying to get a reaction. But the creature
remained still. Many cracks splint the concrete below where the lizard lies,
allowing just enough space for small ants to crawl in between. The ants slowly emerge
onto the concrete into the light as if they were appearing out of thin air.
Over time the ants begin to inch closer and closer to large lizard. Still
nothing could initiate any reaction from the green beast. As cars roll down the
street and squirrels jump from branch to branch, the lizard remains perched in
its kingdom. All of a sudden, the creature became animate. Life seemed to pounce
its long body as the mailman slowly approaches. The lizard slowly turns its
head to face the approaching human, contemplating its next move. As the mailman
comes closer and closer, the lizard realizes that it must leave the immediate
area and quickly scatters away into the shrubbery surrounding the lawn.
